Beverage Choices in Chicago

Healthy Beverage Choices in Chicago

You only have a couple of minutes to grab a drink from the break room vending machine before your next meeting begins. What do you grab? Finding something you enjoy should be easy as there many options available in Chicago that aim to meet a wide variety of preferences. The previous scenario has likely happened to most of us more than once but appears to have declined in overall occurrences during the past decade.

According to The NPD Group, a global market research company, the average person drank three non-tap water beverages per day during the past 10 years even though fewer beverages were purchased each year during that same time period. Whether at work, running errands or eating at a restaurant, consumers frequently choose soft drinks followed by coffee, milk, and iced tea.

Even though bottled water was not mentioned specifically, sales of plain bottled water and bottled sparkling water in restaurants and other establishments increased by 12% between February 2015 and February 2016, the largest increase of all beverage types. Water offers unique health benefits to those in Chicago who drink it. According to the Centers for Disease Control, water helps to regulate our body temperature, lubricate and cushion our joints, and protect our spinal cord.

Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD, the director of nutrition at WebMD, writes that water keeps our body hydrated which helps all of its systems to function properly, decreases muscle fatigue which can contribute to poor performance, and helps skin to stay hydrated and healthy. Additionally, researchers at the University of Illinois determined that the more water a person drank, the fewer overall calories that person consumed. For most individuals, a decrease in calories, even by a small amount, can positively impact long-term health.

Healthy Beverage Choices in Chicago

If you are one of the many folks in Chicago who does not like plain water or gets bored drinking plain water all the time, there are now many alternatives available. Adding flavors that you enjoy to plain water can help you to drink more water than you would if it were plain. At home, adding a wedge of lemon or lime to your tap water, bottled water or unflavored carbonated water is a simple fix. When you are out, purchase naturally flavored bottled water or mineral water from a healthy vending machine.

Consuming coffee and tea offer different health benefits than consuming water. The Institute of Food Technologists recently published a study in the Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety that found that moderate coffee drinking, three to four cups per day, has a neutral effect on health.

The World Health Organization states that regular consumption of coffee could protect against at least two types of cancer. Tea, drunk in moderation, lowers the risk of cognitive decline, heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes because of the number of flavonoids, a type of nutrient, in the beverage. New studies examining other impacts of coffee and tea on specific medical conditions continue to occur. As with many other beverages, it is important to be aware of the amount of added sweeteners in your coffee or tea.

A Healthy Energy Boost in Chicago

Healthy Snacks and Beverages in Chicago

Have you ever had one of those days when you need an energy boost to make it through the day? If you have, you’re not alone. Even athletes such as elite marathoners sometimes need an energy boost while training and competing. Marathoners have traditionally used gels for an energy boost, but there is a new trend among athletes that could soon find its way into your healthy break room vending machine—caffeinated gum.

Caffeine is known to increase one’s alertness and decrease fatigue. Recent research about caffeinated gum and its effects on athletes by New Zealand’s Eastern Institute of Technology’s Carl Paton confirmed that caffeinated gum behaves in the same way as gels by improving performance, focus and clarity. To combat your afternoon slump, try adding caffeinated gum to one of these healthy options.

Choose Healthy Snacks

What you eat matters. Eating healthy is important for all of us in Chicago, not just athletes. Choosing healthy snacks whether it be cheese slices with whole wheat crackers or sliced apples with peanut butter plays an important role in combating the sluggishness and fatigue caused by poor nutrition. The saying that food is our body’s fuel is true as what we eat either positively or negatively impacts how we perform. Whether you keep healthy snacks in your desk or choose ones from a vending machine, make healthy selections to see the most benefit.

Drink Water

Our bodies are made of multiple systems that rely on water to be able to function correctly. Unfortunately, most of us don’t drink nearly enough to make up for the water that we lose every day, which can lead to dehydration. Side effects of dehydration include lack of energy and fatigue. To combat dehydration, the Mayo Clinic recommends that men drink about 13 cups or 3 liters of beverages per day, and women drink about 9 cups or 2.2 liters per day. Water and other non-sugary beverages can be found in your office vending machine or healthy break room.

Go for a Walk

Movement is a great way to increase energy levels and improve focus. It could be going for a walk in your Chicago neighborhood or doing jumping jacks at your desk. As long as your blood flow increases and you breathe a bit faster, you should see benefits. Exercise is also great for stress relief. When we decrease our stress level, our mood often improves and we feel more motivated to accomplish our to-do lists. Whether you exercise with a friend or on your own, get moving.

Have Some Caffeine

Most often when we need a boost of energy, we gravitate toward coffee or other caffeinated beverages. There are times, however, when consuming caffeine in a beverage is not an option.  For example, you might not have a cup of coffee or other caffeinated beverage nearby or you may not enough time to drink an entire beverage. Caffeinated gum has an additional benefit that caffeinated beverages do not. The caffeine from caffeinated gum bypasses the digestive system and goes straight into your system, so you feel the effect of the caffeine faster.

Eating healthy snacks, drinking water and exercising all contribute to increased energy throughout the day at the office. Caffeinated gum offers the extra pick me up that we all sometimes need. Would your Chicago consumers like to see caffeinated gum as a healthy snack in their vending machines or healthy break room? Contact Mark Vend today at 847-291-9216.

Why Missing Breakfast is a Significant Problem in Chicago

Healthy Break Room Breakfast Choices in Chicago

You’ve heard the famous saying: “Breakfast is the healthiest meal of the day.” But is that really true? Is it really that bad if you skip breakfast? You might be telling yourself, “who has the time to make eggs and toast with avocado on top?” In reality, there are many serious risks to skipping breakfast, ranging from your mood to obesity. Some even claim it can threaten your life to put off having a breakfast. Sacrificing ten minutes of sleep for a hearty breakfast is well worth your time for several reasons.

Moody

Skipping breakfast makes you more moody than necessary. According to a 2002 BBC News World Edition article, a moody temperament was improved if they ate breakfast. Furthermore, 26% of people had a large change in temperament by changing their diet. This included making breakfast a daily meal. Elizabeth Somer, author of Eat Your Way to Happiness, she admitted to being a “breakfast avoider for many years,” especially while working full time. When she stopped working full time, people said she would “gain tons of weight.” But she proved them wrong by making sure she ate a “sane breakfast and a light lunch,” which led to actually losing 30 pounds. Losing weight and having more energy makes her “a much happier human being.” Her changes can be implemented in Chicago, even as a full time employee with enough effort.

Slowed metabolism

By skipping breakfast, you might be increasing your risk of obesity. In addition, losing weight may be harder for you, simply because you are skipping breakfast. There are many benefits to eating breakfast. For example, you are less likely to overeat by making breakfast a priority in your day. It also quickens your metabolism and increases your energy throughout the day. This makes sense because when you are sleeping, you are fasting. “Prolonged fasting,” Leah Cahill warns, “leads to increases in diastolic and systolic blood pressure, blood concentrations of insulin, triglycerides, free fatty acids and LDL-cholesterol, and to decreases in concentrations of HDL-cholesterol.” In an attempt to correct this, you are more likely to make unhealthy choices as your cravings, leading to obesity. Of course, obesity comes with a slew of problems, such as infertility. Fasting for extended periods of time can be stressful on your body – even life-threatening. Clearly, breakfast is worth implementing into your daily life.

Menstrual Irregularities

College students are guilty of skipping breakfast in exchange for a few more minutes of sleep. This certainly can apply to many adults in the workforce in Chicago, who may work late nights and have early mornings. Female students who skipped breakfast, according to a 2010 survey study by “Appetite,” had more menstrual irregularities than those who ate breakfast. Pain, irregularity, and even constipation was heightened by choosing to forgo breakfast.

Healthy Break Room Breakfast Choices in Chicago

Heart Problems

This is accompanied with a slower metabolism. But the problem is quite serious, apparently, according to a Harvard study evaluating eating habits and its influence for coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. In a group of 27,000 male healthcare professionals, they evaluated their lifestyle choices (such as skipping breakfast) and their health over 16 years. They were 45-82 years old at the beginning of the study. During the 16 years, 1527 CHD cases were diagnosed. In fact, men who skipped breakfast had a 27% higher risk of CHD than those who did not skip breakfast.

Slower Cognitive Development

In a Centers for Disease Control report, they found that children skipping breakfast had more trouble problem-solving. Students who ate breakfast, however, tested higher in standardized tests, missed less school, and were timelier to classes. This does not apply exclusively to children, though. As an adult, your body needs the energy to work effectively. Skipping breakfast is like going on a trip without a suitcase – it is a lot harder. While many see the problem with unhealthy food, the significance of eating healthy food may prove to be just as important.

What do you think? Do you focus better by having breakfast? Do you notice a difference? The results seem to indicate a strong case for eating breakfast. While it’s an easy meal to skip, especially in the beginning of the day, your mind and body will thank you for taking the extra time for breakfast.

Chicago Consumers Crave Snacks with High Quality Ingredients

Healthy Snacks in Chicago

Most Americans know the benefits of eating healthy, even if it’s just losing some weight. In addition, many Americans want to eat healthier, but lack the motivation. In fact, according to Mintel, the top reason for not eating healthy is lack of availability. The other reasons for eating badly includes cost, confusion, time, and taste. However, one of the easiest ways to offer healthy food to your Chicago employees is in your own office. In fact, 73 percent of consumers are willing to pay more for snacks with high quality ingredients. Additionally, 50 percent of consumers said they would buy more from specialty snack shops if healthier snacks were offered.

In today’s quick, instantaneous gratification for nearly everything, it’s no surprise people reach for whatever is convenient. In fact, 80 percent of Americans believe being healthy requires sacrifices, while 64 percent of consumers agree that snacking is necessary to get through the day. Essentially, Chicago consumers need snacks, but don’t want to sacrifice time, money, taste, or other reasons to fulfill their cravings. Lauren Bonetto of Mintel, a Lifestyles & Leisure Analyst at Mintel, said Americans believe “living a modern lifestyle impedes their ability to be healthy.”

Healthy Snacks in Chicago

Millennials, in particular, would be motivated by healthy snack options. Many dine at snack shops to treat themselves (60 percent) and as a way to gain an energy boost (38 percent). In addition, 71 percent of millennials say snacks are best eaten on the go. According to Diana Kelter, a Foodservice Analyst at Mintel, millennials are “America’s primary snacking generation.” As a result, snack shops act as a great destination for quick treats in their fast-paced lives. They are also very conscious of the way they spend their money, according to a study by T. Rowe Price. For those over 18 years old, 75 percent of millennials track their expenses carefully and diligently, while 67 percent save “by any means necessary.” This means their monetary choices are made consciously.

Everyone benefits from healthier food choices. Healthier food intake leads to less half days, due to doctor appointments. The benefits for healthy eating does wonders for the body and brain and actually saves consumers money. In fact, adding produce and lean meat adds $1.50 a day to food costs, but you save $2.71 for every dollar spent by preventing health problems. For this reason alone, loyalty programs would be a worthy endeavor. If Chicago Millennials decide to spend their money, it needs to be worthwhile in their eyes.

Market effectively to Chicago Millennials by appealing to their emotions, survey says

Office Coffee Service in Chicago

Coffee isn’t just a way to caffeinate in the morning. For Millennials, selecting coffee is an emotional experience. The social and environmental effects are vitally important to Chicago Millennials. While freshness and affordability are still important, a new survey shows that Millennials are emotionally connected to coffee’s history.

What the survey says

According to an online survey (of more than 900 Millennials), “The language Millennials use and the attitudes they have indicate that they are deeply connected to coffee on an emotional level.” The study was conducted by Datassential (a Chicago-based foodservice research firm) and published by custom coffee roaster S&D Coffee & Tea, who added, “For them, coffee is not just a drink, it’s an experience.”

The opinions of Millennials are important because they are current and future consumers. John Buckner, S&D Vice President of Marketing says, “The magnitude of this generation [Millennials] is such that we know their attitude toward coffee will significantly impact our customer’s growth for years to come; we’re excited about being able to better understand their preferences and perceptions and how those evolve over time.”

The survey results indicate a strong preference for knowing how the coffee they drink is grown and harvested. As a result, sustainability determines if Millennials will buy coffee in most situations. How is the coffee helping socially, environmentally, and economically? In other words, Chicago Millennials believe in being smart consumers, whether that’s branded coffee or brewed at home.

If you want to reach Millennials, offer sustainably sourced coffee. The study said, “Sustainable sourcing is a consistently powerful term whose influence extends beyond just improved perceptions around an operation’s coffee offerings.”

About 45% of Millennials feel better about places that offer sustainably-sourced coffee. This was most important to them, even above Fair Trade Certification, USDA organic, locally-sourced, direct trade coffees. Additionally, more than a quarter would go out of their way to obtain sustainably-sourced coffee. The “vast majority” of Millennials would also “be willing to pay a small premium for coffee that is sustainably sourced,” the survey stated.

Interestingly, only 22% of Millennials knew the exact definition and specific requirements necessary to qualify as sustainable.

Office Coffee Service in Chicago

What the survey means for you

When offering coffee to Millennials, it’s clearly effective to use coffee that sustainably sourced. Yet, the survey noted that it has a chance of backlash. If the Chicago consumer thinks it’s being used insincerely, they may avoid it altogether. “Use of coffee terms as mere labels will render them powerless to sharp-eyed Millennials who are increasingly skeptical of unsupported language,” the survey noted. Choose your coffee with caution and wisdom. Do you believe that the coffee brand is sustainably sourced? If not, then Millennials probably don’t either.

Slightly over 40% of consumers associate organic with sustainable, the study found, with a little over 30% associating sustainable with Fair Trade Certified or environmentally-friendly harvesting practices. Only 22% associate sustainable with better taste and even fewer (only 15%) associating it with better aroma. Environmental factors were also more important than labor practices and social impact.

Best solution for you

If Millennials are drawn to sustainable sourcing, the coffee you offer must be truthful. Furthermore, there needs to be easily accessible specifics about the chosen coffee brand. If “sustainable sourcing” is just slapped onto the coffee, Millennials may see it as dishonest. Thus, there must be proof of “sustainable sourcing” or it will be worthless. If the coffee says it is “sustainably sourced,” along with other well-known labels, it will make Chicago Millennials trust the coffee offered. In fact, having a list of what makes coffee “sustainably sourced” in a millennial workforce break room might be powerful when paired with a coffee that is truly sustainably sourced. Essentially, be honest and transparent when appealing to Millennials’ coffee needs, and they will love your coffee.

Why the Art and Science of Coffee Is Vital for Your Chicago Business

Office Coffee Service in Chicago

Roughly 100 million people drink coffee daily. Yet, most coffee drinkers do not fully understand the intricacies and processes required to create the perfect cup of coffee, but they can taste the difference.

Coffee requires knowledge of its origin, how it’s roasted, and what kind of brewing machine is used. Where does coffee come from? How much rain did it get? What temperatures did it develop in? Also, what kind of bean is used? Does the brewing machine even matter? These are the questions you should be able to answer. When horticulture and marketing is done correctly, your Chicago customer base can’t help becoming loyal. Then, you just have to stay consistent. Coffee excellence is more than just a label; it’s a perfect blend of science and art.

Lesson 1: Black coffee, specialty beverages, and knowledgeable coffee consumers

Roughly 54 percent of Americans 18 years and older drink coffee daily. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there is more than 322 million people in America. Of 322 million people, more than 173 million coffee drinkers are thirsty for impeccable coffee. The National Coffee Association reported last year that coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the U.S., while past-day coffee consumption was almost 60 percent. Mintel adds that the majority of coffee consumed in the U.S. is specialty coffee. Chicago employees are more aware than ever about coffee. For instance, if employees have smelled freshly ground coffee within the first day of roasting, you’ll have employees who can’t go back to plain, boring cups of coffee. They will have a strong desire for fresh coffee again. And with so many knowledgeable coffee drinkers now, you have to offer quality beans. Once you’ve had quality, mouthwatering coffee, it’s very difficult to go back.

Specialty coffees are best when they’re original. In other words, you must have a unique genetic and agricultural origin of coffee plants, cherries, and seeds. Careful processing techniques can increase the potential of the seeds and elevate the unique taste. Stay different by utilizing and understanding the beans’ local growth and development.

Lesson 2: Product development can determine how it’s marketed to consumers

Marketing trends are powerful, especially in the coffee world. Even if you have the best beans in the world for your Chicago employees, it may not do well if it’s poorly presented.

For example, did you know Teddy Roosevelt’s family built a New York coffee chain 50 years prior to Starbucks? Probably not (unless you are good at history). Starbucks changed the coffee industry dramatically by giving Americans a way to quickly consume specialty coffee in a convenient manner. They were able to create an appealing, marketable product that filled a need. Your need is quality coffee, which you can elevate by making sure it has an interesting background, intricate design, or uses color effectively.

Markets are constantly changing, so it’s important to stay ahead of the game by staying up-to-date. For example, don’t choose a coffee with boring presentation. Make sure the look of the product matches the quality of your coffee.

Again, you can learn everything when it comes to growing, harvesting, processing transporting, and preserving coffee. But without knowing the marketing trends, such as Keurig K-cups being provided in the office, you will fail.

Office Coffee Service in Chicago

Lesson 3: Coffee revolutions in the office

The Keurig machine brought supply to the demand for a “gourmet” coffee solution in Chicago. Their commitment to freshness brought an army of coffee roasters who were willing to buy the packaging license and accept the one-year expiration date. Before the Keurig, Nescafe offered espresso capsules and brewing systems – in Europe. But North Americans weren’t ready for espresso shots in the 1980s (when it was introduced), so it left Starbucks to reap the rewards in the mid-1990s (when we were ready).

In 2013 alone, Nespresso sales exceeded $300 million in the U.S., but Nestle executive Jean-Marc Duvoisin doesn’t feel that they are competing with the Keurig. Nestle is focusing on premium, top quality coffee, which is why he believes they are not “direct competitors.” Instead, they’ll be “creating a new market,” he said.

Lesson 4: Apply your lessons

Research your coffee. Don’t pick randomly, and hope it works. If you’re smart and selective in your coffee choice in the office, your Chicago employees will notice. The coffee market is always changing, so knowing what makes certain brands appealing is important as well. Don’t be afraid to choose a little coffee company with detailed branding and impeccable taste. In addition, your coffee could be a big, well-known brand, as long as it suits the environment of your office. Know your beans intimately and never forget that coffee is an ever-evolving industry. If you look for creative branding and coffee with big taste, you can’t go wrong.

If you are looking for office coffee to offer in your break room, call Mark Vend at 847-291-9216 today for a free, no obligation consultation, where we can help you with your break room needs.

Chicago Consumers Crave Spicy Foods

Spicy Break Room Snacks in Chicago

Are you a spicy food lover? If not, you might become one. According to Emily Liu, marketing director for Buck Wild, “Americans are snacking more than ever.” Furthermore, she said they are “demanding more complex, bold and spicy profiles.”

The growth of spicy food should not be surprising. Since the introduction of sriracha, foodservice has worked hard to spice menus up in new flavors. This shift in foodservice has led to a more broad, open, and evolving taste buds, according to Technomic’s “2015 Flavor Consumer Trend Report.” Chicago consumers are searching for more complex combinations and more types of peppers. At least 78% of consumers desire moderately spicy foods, while 55% crave spicy food flavors.

Food companies have noted the larger consumer base for spicy food lovers. One of the hottest chili peppers in the world is the ghost pepper. Companies like Wendy and Sbarro have begun including ghost-pepper flavors into various items on their menu.

The increase in a desire for spicy foods may be due to a new generation: Millennials. The report by Technomic indicates 45% of those between 18-34 years of age want more Chicago restaurants to offer foods with a combination of flavors.

McCormick & Company reveals an annual forecast of culinary trends in homes, restaurants, and retailers. The global team of chefs, food technologists, and flavor experts for 2016 listed several spicy food groups. For example, “Heat + Tang” was at the top of the list, which includes Peruvian chilies, lime, and sambal sauce (which is made with chilies). They also listed a “Tropical Asian” cuisine, which has peppers, chilies, and even a Malaysian spicy paste.

Spicy Break Room Snacks in Chicago

Spicy food doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. While many see the importance of spicy food, they do not see the extent of its importance. For instance, Amy Smith, director of culinary innovation for Minneapolis-based Buffalo Wild Wings, said they “featured a ghost-pepper sauce” for a limited time. “We ordered six weeks worth from our supplier,” she said, “but ran out in a week.”

Their underrated success should make all food enthusiasts think twice. Dataessential made a list of spices, sauces, and peppers picking up heat, including the ghost pepper, gochujang, togarashi, and shishito peppers.

Is spicy food a food fad in Chicago or is it more? With increasing demand for spicy food and an upcoming generation (Millennials) who love it, it seems it will only grow with time. What do you think?

The Information Age Has Arrived: Chicago Consumers Want Transparency When Choosing Food

Office Break Room Options in Chicago

Have you noticed how closely people in the break room look at labels on products before buying them? Welcome to the information age—and the health conscious generation.

In recent years, consumer product manufacturers have added more nutrition labels and improved the way this information is organized. Many of these changes are due to government labeling rules. But product manufacturers also know that Chicago’s consumers want nutritional information because they are health conscious, and they are also in the habit of reading about ingredients and nutritional values in food, thanks to the growth of smartphones.

Label Insight’s 2016 Transparency ROI Study reveals that nearly 9 in 10 consumers say transparency is important to them across every food product category. Forty percent say they would switch to a new brand if it offered full product transparency.

The study surveyed more than 2,000 consumers and examined the information consumers seek from brands, how they want to access that information, and how that information affects purchase behavior and brand loyalty. The study points to an overall desire for more product information, as well as an inclination to be more loyal to brands that provide more detail.

Brands that fulfill this demand by providing comprehensive product information are poised to grow.

“This study reveals what matters most to consumers in terms of the products they use and consume, and draws a clear correlation between transparency and improved consumer trust, enhanced brand loyalty, and overall long term value in repeat purchase,” said Patrick Moorhead, chief marketing officer of Label Insight.

Office Break Room Options in Chicago

Key survey findings include:

  • 81 percent of consumers say they would consider a brand’s entire portfolio of products if they switched to that brand as a result of increased transparency.
  • 56 percent say additional product information about how food is produced, handled or sourced would make them trust that brand more.
  • 73 percent say they would be willing to pay more for a product that offers complete transparency in all attributes.
  • 94 percent say they are likely to be loyal to a brand that offers complete transparency.
  • 86 percent of 18 to 34-year-old women with children say they would pay more for food products with completely transparent information.
  • 79 percent say they are very likely or somewhat likely to use “SmartLabel” technology, and 44 percent say they would trust a brand more if it participated in the SmartLabel initiative.

The SmartLabel initiative is a food industry program that allows Chicago consumers to get additional details about products by scanning a barcode or doing an online search to reach a landing page with ingredient and attribute information. It marks one of many initiatives responding to consumer demand for transparency.

There is no question that product information about the food and snacks is important to consumers. Employee break rooms that have this information on or near the products will make life easier for today’s health conscious consumers.

“By providing information consumers want in one place, brands have the opportunity to create lasting trust and valued relationships with their customers,” Moorhead said.
